What does a Nurse Practitioner do?

Under the direction of physicians, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant provides comprehensive care to patients, including assessments and consultation services with education on preoperative and postoperative care. In collaboration with the health care team, the NP provides continuity of care to patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting to achieve optimal outcomes and support patients during a traumatic time.

The NP assists the surgeon to maximize patient volume and acts as a liaison by monitoring and communicating with high-risk patients, and formulates treatment and education plans for the patient as directed by the physician.

What does a typical day on the job look like?
  • Provides comprehensive patient assessments including ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests; diagnoses; prescription of pharmacologic agents and non-pharmacologic therapies for inpatients and outpatients. Interprets highly complex surgical pathology and communicates results to patients.
  • Assist physicians in ER consults and floor consults, while in clinic and between surgical cases. Determines if surgery is necessary, and arranges all perioperative orders and scheduling.
  • Provides preoperative and postoperative care including patient education, maintaining communication with patients and their families.
  • Assists the surgeon during operations by holding retractors, operating laparoscopic cameras, assisting in robotic procedures, suturing wounds, using surgical staplers, providing suction, and supporting the surgeon as needed.
  • Maximizes patient volume and monitors high-risk patients; returns patient calls in a timely manner; provides follow-up.
  • Coordinates with oncology and radiation oncology for cancer patients. Interprets radiology results to determine the surgical plan.
  • Develops a cost-aware plan of care with patients and/or caregivers that maximizes health potential.
  • Formulates a treatment plan including ordering diagnostic tests, selecting pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, developing a patient education plan, and obtaining necessary consultations or referrals.
  • Consults with physicians regarding patient care issues and concerns; communicates clinical findings and collaborates with physicians on treatment and education plans.
  • Conducts a small lesion clinic by performing minor procedures and seeing postoperative patients independently in the office.
  • Reviews referrals for soft tissue tumors and skin lesions; delegates as appropriate for excision; completes discharge summaries for two physicians.
  • Demonstrates productivity by organizing patient care, delegating to staff, prioritizing workload, and improving clinical processes and education.
  • Hosts floor-specific educational seminars for nursing education and helps implement new protocols.
What are the requirements for the job?
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing and maintaining board/association certification
  • Licensed by the State of Missouri as a Registered Nurse to practice as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. DEA license, helpful
  • 4 years experience as NP in surgical specialty, strongly preferred
  • Current BLS through American Heart Association
  • High level of autonomy, first assistant skills, procedural skills, complex wound care
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and exceptional patient-centered care mentality
