As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will perform a variety of maintenance duties under limited supervision to help maintain this system. The position is located in Jackson, Wyoming.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain and operate complex equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Assist in training other technicians in equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Under limited supervision, flag traffic and set up traffic control devices.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lifts, and snow removal systems.
  • Rehabilitate roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings.
  • Maintain highway‑related facilities such as rest areas, including water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements.
  • Complete all required state and federal training to obtain and maintain certifications, perform inspections, and acquire new skills.
  • Communicate information to update others on status and/or process effectiveness.
  • Use computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and stay current on technological advances.
  • Remove snow and ice from roadways; assess treatment effectiveness and determine when changes are needed.
  • Adhere to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including correct use of personal protective equipment.
Preferences
  • Current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Ability to obtain certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Certification in Defensive Driving.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Flagger certification.
Knowledge
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards.
  • State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Hazardous materials response procedures.
  • Personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Basic operation of single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • Safe work procedures, First Aid, CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used.
  • Basic office equipment use (computers, calculators, telephones).
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • 2‑4 years of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Construction)
    * or
    * - Associate’s Degree in Engineering
    - 0‑1 year of relative work experience.

Certificates & Licenses

  • Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat, hail).
  • Ability to walk long periods of time on even and uneven ground.
  • Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Occasional overnight travel is required.
Notes
  • FLSA:
    Non‑Exempt.
  • Motor vehicle record checks will verify a valid driver’s license.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and physical examination required; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Availability for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Wyoming Department of Transportation is a drug‑free workplace.
