The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS is seeking a qualified full-time physician who is certified by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic and clinical pathology (preferred) to serve as the Chief, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service. The Service Chief position has two primary roles with respect to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at this facility. Related to administrative oversight, the service chief must ensure compliance with all quality, policy, and regulatory requirements (e.g. VHA Directives, CAP, Joint Commission standards, etc.)
and the availability of an appropriate, well trained staff. The chief also makes determinations regarding resource management issues, including personnel actions, budget, major and minor equipment, space, contracting, benchmarking, outreach, and networking among others. With regard to clinical leadership, the chief must ensure that appropriate medical services are available in a timely manner for the support of quality patient care.
Clinical responsibilities will also include performing routine anatomic pathology reports. The service chief serves as the primary interface for the laboratory with local hospital leadership, other medical services and VISN committees.
The position reports directly to the Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the Chief of Staff and Medical Center Director. Outstanding interpersonal skills are essential, as the successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary staff in the delivery of excellent health care to our nations' veterans. Candidates must possess the skills to interact positively with the Medical Center's leadership team to lead and promote staff excellence, staff development, with experience in an academic setting.
Applicants must be eligible for faculty appointment. The incumbent will be on-call 24/7 (anatomic and/or clinical) as delineated in the monthly rotation schedule. The physician must also maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
The Jackson VAMC is a 155 bed tertiary care hospital with an attached 86 bed community living center and major affiliate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and supports University of Mississippi School of Medicine residency and fellowship programs with VA-supported positions. Medical, nursing, and allied-health students also train at the Jackson VA. The hospital supports a primary care population in excess of 45,000 patients and provides specialty, subspecialty, and ancillary care to additional veterans from the Gulf Coast and Louisiana.

REQUIRED:
Citizenship: U.S. Citizens (non-citizens may be appointed whenqualified citizens are not available).
Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
