About the Agency

The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce's (Department) mission is to support and apply necessary regulations to agricultural-related businesses within the state and to promote Mississippi's products throughout both the state and the rest of the world for the benefit of Mississippi citizens. The Department is dedicated to promoting and heightening the public's awareness of Mississippi's agricultural history, agriculture commodities and the farmers and ranchers who produce them through participation in trade shows, conferences and various other community and agricultural related organizations.

Through its various bureaus, the Department seeks to protect the health and economic welfare in conjunction with the agricultural and horticultural interests of Mississippi. These activities include registering pesticides, feeds, seeds, fertilizers, and soil amendments, as well as, permitting all pest control operators throughout the state. The Department conducts inspections of producers, grocery stores, meat establishments, fuel stations and other commercial operations to ensure adherence to applicable regulations including, without limitation, food safety and the certification of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce.

This is a non-state service position (x-16). The Public Relations Specialist I position is within the Marketing and Governmental Affairs Division of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce. This position works closely with the Mississippi Market Bulletin assisting the Editor with content, layout, and classified advertisements. This position develops content for social media, newsletters, press releases, websites, and other communications channels and serves as a liaison with the media for the agency.

This position understands the role and dynamics of the bureaus and divisions of the Department and possesses the ability to accurately communicate information to the public.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the Editor of the Mississippi Market Bulletin with content development, article writing, layout design, and insertion of classified advertisements for the bi-monthly publication.
  • Plans, develops, and implements social media campaigns to increase visibility and engagement.
  • Supports the development, design, and distribution of weekly and monthly e-newsletters to engage the public and increase outreach.
  • Assists with website updates relating to the Market Development Division.
  • Designs marketing and promotional materials, such as brochures, ads, and posters.
  • Develops creative content for radio, print, and social media advertisements.
  • Writes and distributes press releases.
  • Contributes to content development for the annual publication Mississippi Agriculture.
  • Monitors, tracks, and analyzes agency media communications.
  • Represents and promotes the agency, its programs, and Mississippi agriculture by attending, speaking, and participating in various events such as field days, school activities, trade shows, conferences etc.
  • Special duties as assigned by the Commissioner, Chief of Staff, Deputy Commissioner, and Bureau Director of Marketing and Governmental Affairs.
