Job SummaryThe Academic Navigator (12‑month, full‑time position) supports students in college‑level gateway math courses throughout the academic year (fall, spring, and summer) across all modalities. The Navigator provides personalized assistance and facilitates active learning to help students reach their educational goals, working in individual or group tutoring, or virtual environments. The role collaborates with faculty to determine high‑need concepts and skills, monitors student progress, and offers feedback to both students and faculty to improve academic performance.
The Navigator also participates in student success initiatives related to academic readiness, placement, and preparation.
- Provide one‑on‑one or small group tutoring sessions to help students understand course material.
- Utilize technology and data analysis tools to enhance tutoring scheduling and effectiveness.
- Work closely with faculty to align tutoring sessions with course objectives and content.
- Coordinate efforts with faculty and staff to identify students with academic needs.
- Offer constructive feedback on student performance.
- Teach effective study techniques and time‑management strategies.
- Connect students with other relevant academic support resources.
- Participate in Learning Resources/Academic Support meetings, faculty meetings, and training sessions as required.
- Track and document student progress to meet individual needs, maintaining detailed records of tutoring outcomes.
- Generate regular reports on student engagement and tutoring outcomes; share insights with the Dean of Learning Resources to evaluate the model’s efficacy.
- Participate in programs related to academic readiness, placement, and preparation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related subject area.
- At least 2 years of experience in tutoring, education, communication, social work, or another relevant field.
- Master’s degree in Mathematics or a related discipline.
- Experience tutoring or teaching at the college level, especially in a community college setting.
- Experience with tutoring in multiple modalities, including in‑person, hybrid, or virtual.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn student information systems (e.g., Banner), LMS platforms (e.g., D2L, Canvas, Blackboard), and other relevant technologies.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills.
- Record‑keeping and reporting skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students, and the public.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to foster student motivation and confidence.
- Willingness to learn software and digital platforms related to student learning in the discipline area.
- Availability to work some evenings and weekends, if needed.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Prolonged periods of standing at times.
- Prolonged screen time.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Repetitive movements.
$41,984 — $52,480 (Annual salary, depending on eligible experience per the current compensation plan).
