Base pay range: $35.00/yr – $40.00/yr
Qualifications- Education and Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology), ecology, sustainability or applied science in sustainability, life sciences (e.g., biology, microbiology, health physics or biophysics), environmental health, pre‑medicine, engineering or other acceptable science or natural resource related field. - Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of rules governing Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems and State Operating Permit regulations.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment.
- Applicants for the TDEC Environmental Scientist 1
* or Health Physicist 1
* must successfully complete the required training courses offered by the Division of Radiological Health. - For geologic duties, must have completed the required college coursework at the time of appointment and be eligible to take the licensing examination offered by Tennessee’s Department of Commerce and Insurance’s Board of Professional Geologists, or hold a current Geology license from Tennessee or a reciprocal state.
- Biologist positions must meet specific educational requirements of at least 36 quarter hours (or 24 semester hours) in biology, including areas such as biological sciences, botanical sciences, environmental or conservation sciences, zoological sciences, or aquatic/terrestrial/wetland biology or ecology.
- Failure to meet these qualifications may result in termination.
- Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of rules governing Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems and State Operating Permits.
- Read and interpret maps, provide guidance, and create diagrams.
- Write and review technical reports and inspection documents.
- Apply rules and regulations to a variety of compliance situations.
- Maintain digital permit files, records, and reports.
- Operate a state vehicle and drive to remote sites to perform inspections.
- Communicate with varied individuals or customers.
