Position Summary: The Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA) works under the supervision of faculty and/or staff to assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing data; support special projects; and perform other duties assigned by the unit supervisor.
Positions will be filled based on the individual applicant’s skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Graduate students applying will have their transcripts and letters of recommendation reviewed by the hiring unit.
Compensation: GAAs work 20 hours per week during a fall or spring semester or a full summer term (May, June, July). Hourly rate is $8.25 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week (16 weeks). Student pay is disbursed biweekly; students must clock in and out for each shift. In addition, GAAs receive a scholarship of up to $4,386.00 per semester that covers general university fees and tuition.
Students remain responsible for additional international, program, and course fees.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist administrative staff with collecting, organizing, and analyzing various types of data or information.
- Assist with special projects.
- Perform additional duties as required by the department.
Graduate Assistantship
Qualifications:
- Must be classified as a degree‑seeking graduate student at JSU.
- Must be actively enrolled in a graduate degree program at JSU during the assistantship semester.
- If a new student, must be admitted to a degree program.
- Must be actively enrolled in required coursework toward the degree; the assistantship will not pay for courses not in the degree program plan of study/checklist.
- Must hold the minimum required GPA for the student’s enrolled degree program.
- During the assistantship semester, must be enrolled at JSU in six to nine (6‑9) graduate semester hours in a fall or spring semester or six to nine (6‑9) graduate semester hours in a full summer term. Exceptions may be granted by the Director of Graduate Studies under the following circumstances:
- Students required to take undergraduate courses for a graduate degree must have those courses documented as required via memo from the advisor to the Director of Graduate Studies.
- Students who have made satisfactory progress toward the graduate degree and need fewer than six (6) graduate semester hours may be considered for an assistantship.
- Students who will hold a Graduate Teaching Assistantship during a summer term may enroll in fewer than six (6) graduate hours, provided the courses are required for the degree.
- Must not hold another campus job.
- A graduate assistant is prohibited from receiving other tuition scholarships or waivers from the University.
- If the student has previously held a graduate assistantship position at JSU, the student must have fulfilled all duties and complied with all policies to be considered for another assistantship.
- It is preferred that a graduate teaching assistant does not teach and take a class during the same summer term. Permission from the advisor and Director of Graduate Studies is required to do so.
- The assistantship tuition scholarship may affect federal financial aid; the student is responsible for determining the impact.
- Students must complete FERPA training, sexual harassment training, and any other JSU required training.
- International graduate assistants must be certified by the Director of International House and Programs.
