The University Student Assistant Employee is responsible for First and Second Year Experience Office operations and assists with special events within the Student Success Center including:
Gamecock Orientation, Freshman Convocation, Preview Day, Admitted Student Day, and more. Positions may be filled based on individual applicants’ skills, qualifications, and departmental needs. Adheres to all department and university policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist with office work including reviewing reports, printing information, and creating packets for students.
  • Work at table events for the First & Second Year Experience Office.
  • Assist students with the transition to college during the fall and spring semesters with a positive and friendly demeanor.
  • Able and willing to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
  • Communicate with the First & Second Year Experience Office staff, co‑workers, campus directors, students, administration, and other contacts in a professional manner.
  • Promote and support student involvement.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director for First & Second Year Experience.
  • Host check‑ins with first year students to discuss and prioritize time management, conflict management, academic coursework, and other identified issues.
  • Assist the Coordinator for Peer Mentoring with hosting check‑in sessions for peer mentors and help recruit future peer mentors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester.
  • If not a first‑time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 2.00 or higher.
  • Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU).
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge:

  • General university policies and procedures.
  • Student services and programs on campus.
  • Student Success Center responsibilities and major events.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Effective public speaking skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, internet, etc.).
  • Developed creative writing skills.

Abilities:

  • Read and comprehend written materials encountered on the job.
  • Gather and analyze information to make recommendations.
  • Work in a team atmosphere with minimal supervision.
  • Learn and adapt to changing situations and requirements.
  • Set goals and objectives and develop strategies to achieve those goals.
