Job Summary

The Instructional Designer for Rail Pros’ Training & Media Services group contributes to the design and development of innovative, effective training programs for our clients. This role works closely with subject matter experts (SMEs), fellow instructional designers, and content creators to develop learning solutions that promote regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and workforce development. Success in this position requires both independent initiative and strong collaboration skills.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Apply adult learning principles and instructional design best practices to create engaging, multimedia-rich course content.
  • Participate in the end-to-end development of learning content, including modes of assessment to measure effectiveness and application of training.
  • Design inclusive learning experiences that reflect diverse learning styles.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to identify training needs and knowledge gaps.
  • Recommend curriculum strategies based on a needs analysis.
  • Define instructional goals and align content accordingly.
  • Develop various training deliverables such as:
    • Instructor-Led Training (ILT) Instructor Guides
    • Exams and Presentations
    • eLearning Modules
    • Surveys
  • Support media production (audio, video, animations, simulations, games).
  • Create interactive exercises and activities to reinforce learning.
  • Establish performance criteria and develop assessment tools.
  • Maintain project documentation and course assets.
  • Conduct post-training evaluations and recommend improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support business needs.
Qualifications Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong understanding of adult learning theory and instructional design methodologies for classroom-based, self-guided, and virtual training.
  • Basic experience with eLearning development tools such as Articulate, Captivate, or similar software.
  • Proficiency in developing instructor‑led training (ILT) materials, including Instructor Guides, Participant Manuals, and Presentations.
  • Expertise in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others to achieve training goals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong proofreading and editing abilities to ensure clarity and consistency.
  • Ability to write engaging instructional content, including scripts for audio and video.
  • Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic communication tools and Microsoft Office Suite.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education or a related field
    .
  • Basic understanding of employee development programs or related experience in instructional design.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • HTML5 competency
    .
  • Experience in the railroad industry or a similar technical field
    .
  • Experience with media production for training materials.
  • Experience working within a Learning Management System (LMS).
