Position Summary

Midnight Sun is looking to hire a Medical Facilities Subject Matter Expert (SME) consultant who will provide specialized technical expertise and advisory support for facility operations, maintenance, and infrastructure systems for Medical and Clinical facilities under The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements. This consultant-level role is activated on an as-needed/Project basis to address complex system issues, provide compliance guidance, support project planning, and deliver technical recommendations.

The SME functions as the on‑site senior technical resource to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant facility operations.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Serve as the senior technical advisor for HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire/life safety, structural, environmental, and Joint Commission compliance requirements.
  • Provide consultation to facility managers and maintenance teams as requested.
  • Troubleshoot complex operational problems and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct facility condition assessments and system evaluations on an as‑needed basis.
  • Advise on compliance with OSHA, NFPA, NEC, IBC/IFC, EPA, Joint Commission standards, and local/state codes.
  • Support safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews when activated.
  • Develop or review facility SOPs, safety protocols, and preventive maintenance standards ensuring all work in support of patient safety and quality care are met.
  • Provide technical review of design documents, specifications, scopes of work, and contractor proposals.
  • Offer quality assurance insight on construction, maintenance, and vendor performance.
  • Assist with federal contract requirements, performance metrics, and compliance documentation.
  • Recommend lifecycle strategies, energy efficiency improvements, and system upgrades.
  • Review CMMS data, maintenance records, and condition assessments to inform planning decisions.
  • Provide targeted training to staff on facility systems and best practices when requested.
  • Prepare technical memos, guidance materials, and consultant‑level recommendations.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements Education and Industry Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, facility management, construction management, or related field; or equivalent technical background.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in facility operations, engineering, or building systems.
  • 5+ years working with The Joint Commission (TJC) requirements and undergone numerous TJC assessments.
  • Experience supporting federal facilities or government contracting environments preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more core technical disciplines, including Joint Commission standards.
  • Strong familiarity with applicable codes and industry standards.
  • Ability to work independently in a consulting capacity with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with CMMS systems and facility reporting tools preferred.
  • Prior experience in healthcare facility operations or as a Joint Commission SME preferred.
Certifications/Licenses/Other
  • Professional credentials such as CFM, FMP, PE, CEM, PMP, or similar preferred.
