The Public Works Department is actively seeking an Engineering Technician Senior.

Responsibilities

This is technical engineering work at the advanced level in the planning and design of moderately complex maintenance and construction projects. The work requires a knowledge of engineering methods, techniques and procedures which is learned through specialized education, training or related experience. May schedule, assign, review and monitor the work of support staff. Contacts require skills in understanding and influencing people and are important in coordinating support activities and resolving related work problems.

The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards involving differing situations requiring use of judgment. The work is performed in both office and field environments where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable and controllable. May operate survey and drafting equipment, motor vehicles, personal computers, calculators and other standard office equipment.

The physical demands are minimal and include exposure to dirt, dust and other unfavorable environmental conditions. The work is performed under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established methods, techniques and procedures, the worker plans and organizes the work, determines priorities, and the work is reviewed, usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness and adherence to established methods and standards.

  • Plans and designs moderately complex maintenance and construction projects such as sewer and water lines, drainage and sewage pump stations, areas and culverts, and vertical construction.
  • Schedules, assigns, reviews and monitors the work of staff engaged in engineering support activities such as construction inspection, drafting and surveying.
  • Responds to and investigates complaints related to ongoing projects.
  • Coordinates with other agencies on matters related to the planning, design and implementation of construction projects.
  • Prepares cost estimates for construction of proposed projects.
  • Reviews contractor plans, specifications and permit applications for adherence to standards.
  • Conducts surveys of proposed sites and prepares plans and specifications for construction.
  • Inspects, oversees and monitors the work of contractors to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.
  • Reviews project disbursement requests and authorizes payments to contractors or consultants.
  • Maintains project records and prepares project status and related reports.
  • Coordinates and manages details of consultant projects.
  • Prepares and acquires necessary permits from local, state and federal agencies.
  • Operates a computer using word processing, spreadsheet, and related software applications.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Knowledge of engineering methods, techniques and procedures used in the planning and design of moderately complex maintenance and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of construction practices, equipment and materials.
  • Knowledge of drafting and land surveying methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, calculus and trigonometry.
