Objective:
To ensure that the GIS switch house building design is structurally adequate, safe, serviceable, constructible, and compliant with the applicable project and regulatory requirements.
Project: GIS Switch House Building
Standards: UK Power Networks (UKPN), British Standards and Eurocodes
Role OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Civil & Structural Design Review Engineer to undertake a comprehensive technical review of the design of a Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) switch house building. The role requires verification of compliance with UK Power Networks (UKPN) standards, applicable British Standards, relevant Eurocodes, project-specific technical requirements, and other applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will review structural design calculations, engineering drawings, design assumptions, technical specifications, and supporting documentation to verify structural adequacy, safety, serviceability, constructability, and overall design compliance.
Key Responsibilities- Review structural design calculations, drawings, specifications, and associated technical documentation.
- Verify compliance with UKPN standards, applicable British Standards, Eurocodes, and project-specific design criteria.
- Assess structural integrity, stability, strength, and serviceability under relevant loading conditions.
- Review design assumptions, load combinations, material properties, foundation design, and structural connections, as applicable.
- Evaluate the adequacy of the building structure in relation to electrical equipment loads, operational requirements, and environmental conditions.
- Identify design discrepancies, technical risks, omissions, inconsistencies, and non-compliances.
- Assess design coordination, interfaces, and constructability considerations.
- Prepare clear and technically justified review comments, highlighting required corrective actions and recommendations.
- Liaise with civil and structural designers, project engineers, and other stakeholders to resolve technical queries.
- Review revised submissions and verify that comments have been adequately addressed.
- Maintain a clear audit trail of design reviews, technical observations, and comment-resolution status.
- Support the project team in achieving safe, compliant, and technically robust design approval.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from a recognised institution.
- Significant experience in civil and structural design, technical design reviews, or independent engineering verification.
- Demonstrable knowledge of British Standards, relevant Eurocodes, and UKPN design requirements.
- Experience reviewing industrial buildings, electrical substations, switch houses, or other power infrastructure facilities.
- Strong understanding of structural analysis, loading criteria, reinforced concrete, structural steelwork, foundations, and connection design.
- Ability to interpret complex engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and design reports.
- Excellent technical report-writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- Previous involvement in UK electrical infrastructure or substation projects.
- Familiarity with GIS switch gear buildings and associated electrical equipment interfaces.
- Experience with independent design checking, design assurance, and technical compliance reviews.
- Knowledge of UK construction practices, relevant statutory requirements, and design risk management.
- Familiarity with structural analysis and design software.
- Comprehensive civil and structural design review report.
- Consolidated design review comments register, including technical justifications and recommended actions.
- Identification of critical safety concerns, design risks, and compliance gaps.
- Review of revised design submissions and closure of outstanding comments.
- Final technical review statement identifying outstanding issues and the status of design compliance.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical judgement, attention to detail, a systematic approach to design verification, and the ability to communicate complex engineering issues clearly. The engineer must be capable of working independently while coordinating effectively with the wider project team.
