About the Job Position Overview
The Accounting Specialist will assist the organization with general ledger accounting and related financial functions. This position ensures accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting, supports management and program staff, and helps maintain strong internal controls and efficient accounting operations.
Key Responsibilities- Create and maintain accurate and compliant financial documents and records.
- Coordinate and respond promptly to all financial communications with external parties.
- Collaborate with senior management and the grants accountant to prepare and adopt organization-wide budgets in a timely manner.
- Work with the grants accountant to properly set up new grant general ledger accounts and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
- Perform cash flow analysis and projections to ensure adequate liquidity for efficient operations.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliations for all bank accounts and prepare/process any necessary journal entries by the 15th of the following month.
- Ensure proper internal controls and safeguard of the organization's assets.
- Enter financial data and transactions accurately into the general ledger system.
- Review the general ledger monthly to identify, research, and correct any errors.
- Review financial documents for accuracy and reconcile accounts as needed.
- Analyze financial data and provide informed financial recommendations to management.
- Ensure financial records comply with all applicable regulatory and accounting standards.
- Generate and distribute timely financial reports.
- Collaborate with other departments to maintain accurate records and provide accounting support.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in accounting or financial management (nonprofit experience a plus).
- Strong understanding of general ledger functions and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Quick Books, Sage Intacct, or similar).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
