Overview

Responsibilities
  • Manage and monitor an assigned caseload of clients participating in a rehabilitation program; develop program plans/goals and evaluate clients’ progress through regular meetings with clients and/or staff.
  • Advocate for clients to obtain services that enable them to cope with their environment.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, assign, instruct, supervise, monitor, evaluate, and provide hiring/firing recommendations for subordinate employees; ensure compliance with department policies and procedures.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with city and county agencies to ensure consistent client referrals.
  • Interview applicants to determine eligibility for program enrollment; prepare case histories, conduct needs assessments, establish goals, and refer applicants to other agencies when not appropriate for the program.
  • Attend and present at community activities or other agencies to educate about The Salvation Army’s program, make client referrals, and monitor client progress.
  • Provide alcohol/drug rehabilitative and Christian-based counseling; conduct initial counseling sessions, develop program plans, meet with clients regularly to ensure progress toward goals, and facilitate individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Serve as liaison to hospitals, police departments, and other community agencies; prepare and maintain detailed client records.
  • Prepare and maintain client files, progress records, assessment forms, monthly statistics, and progress notes; produce required reports and monthly statistical summaries.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate group crisis intervention counseling; conduct group activities, publicize availability, and provide individual crisis counseling as needed; document progress and enforce house rules as required.
  • Plan, coordinate, instruct, and facilitate group classes (focus groups, life skills, anger management, relapse prevention, etc.) and bible study classes; coordinate and prepare weekly staff meetings; oversee GED classes.
  • Coordinate life management classes to build coping skills and obtain guest speakers/workshop presenters as needed.
  • Conduct regular alcohol and/or drug testing; recognize sobriety achievements; stay current with counseling techniques through ongoing education.
  • Plan and establish transitional phases for program graduates; assist with discharge planning and housing resources; organize alumni activities.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in counseling techniques and the ability to interact with a variety of personalities.
  • Knowledge of drugs, their street names, effects, and related counseling considerations; ability to interact effectively with men in the program and communicate with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to utilize various computer programs and maintain accurate client records; capability to multi-task and manage concurrent activities; enforce policies tactfully and courteously.
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration or related field, and four to five years of experience in counseling, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver’s License Required
  • Certified Addiction Counselor (Certificate)
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Ability to use sound judgment, meet attendance requirements, read/write/communicate in English, perform basic math, and operate office equipment. Ability to sit for extended periods with some walking or standing; light physical effort typical of office work.

Work is performed in a normal office environment with minimal physical discomforts.
