The chaplain provides emotional support, spiritual counsel, and comfort addressing the spiritual needs of patients as assigned. She/He offers a spiritual perspective when consulting with staff, patients, and families regarding ethical, moral, or personal issues, excels in crisis and bereavement counseling, and actively participates in the interdisciplinary patient care team. Duties include providing or arranging sacraments/rituals from many faith traditions, coaching, and documentation in EPIC.
The chaplain works cooperatively with department members, promotes a healing environment, and supports leadership through staff development, teaching, and research. Availability for flexible hours, including days, evenings, nights, holidays, weekends, and on‑call, is required. The chaplain assists in orienting new personnel and records patient care encounters in the medical record. “Research literate” is expected during the selection process.
Masters Theological degree (e.g., Master of Divinity) and four units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an APCE‑approved center. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including computer skills, are required. Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience is preferred; two years of healthcare experience is preferred. Board certification or certification‑eligible within one or more national associations (APC, ACPE, AJC, etc.) is preferred. Unrestricted, unexpired driver’s license is required for chaplains whose assignment requires travel.
