This is protective service work at the trainee level in providing security and maintaining order within the courthouse for judges, attorneys, witnesses, jurors, prisoners in custody, defendants on bond, and the general public. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures used in courtroom security, which involves the use of specialized skills, or specialized equipment, learned on the job or through specialized training.
Interactions with others require understanding human behavior and factors influencing behavior; significant interaction with people at all levels within or outside the department. Work follows standard operating procedures and is performed in a courtroom environment with known risks. Operates firearms, restraining devices, and related law enforcement equipment. Physical demands include sitting or standing for long periods; may require exertion in restraining individuals weighing more than 50 pounds.
Work is performed under direct supervision and follows standard practices and procedures.
- Ensures the safety and security of the courtroom, including judges, victims, defendants, witnesses and observers.
- Arrests suspects, completes arrest forms, and advises of applicable rights.
- Transports/escorts inmates and individuals as appropriate.
- Completes related paperwork. Searches the courtroom for abandoned property and/or contraband.
- Prepares and maintains courtroom records/paperwork.
- Operates the telephone and two-way radio equipment.
- Wears a firearm.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of courtroom rules, regulations and procedures; familiarity with Sheriff’s Office SOPs and Court Section Procedure manual.
- Knowledge of Florida Statutes, constitutional law, municipal ordinances, and applicable court decisions.
- Knowledge of safety precautions in handling firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply information including laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Ability to calmly and effectively handle situations with respect for rights.
- Ability to pursue, apprehend, and restrain people; secure and protect City property and detain suspects.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive reports.
- Ability to use firearms and other law enforcement equipment; communicate effectively.
- Ability to read, write and speak English; observe, monitor and recognize people in areas under control; stand and walk for long periods of time.
- OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least nineteen (19) years of age and meet state minimum qualifications including: U.S. citizenship; no felony or perjury-related misdemeanor; no dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces; fingerprints on file; pass medical examination; pass background investigation including polygraph and psychological testing; good moral character; pass controlled substances test; submit affidavit; high school diploma or GED. - OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Twelve (12) month probationary period; safety-sensitive; subject to drug/alcohol testing per City policy. - LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Certificate of Recognition/Compliance in Law Enforcement prior to appointment and maintain; must pass and maintain FL Law Enforcement Certification; valid driver’s license and City driver certification.
Minimum: USD 48,144/year;
Maximum: USD 48,144/year.
