This position is focused on repairs, modifications, and upgrades of rail cars, including rebuilding components such as bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors. Responsibilities include welding, fabricating, using torch and carbon arc for cutting, and performing mechanical labor.
Job DescriptionFLSA Status: Non-Exempt.
The mechanic repairs and maintains railcars according to blueprints, specifications, and production machinery using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments. Duties include inspecting equipment, locating problems, measuring, cutting, threading pipes, and replacing parts. Functions also involve assembling sub-assemblies, major components, and equipment, testing for proper operation, and repairing broken parts with hand tools and welding equipment.
Qualifications- Formal education: high school or equivalent.
- Mechanical skills.
- Welding and cutting skills.
- Must pass company‑established welding test.
- Decision making, reasoning, planning, and scheduling.
- Preferred:
Ability to speak, understand, and read English proficiently.
Standing, hearing, and seeing for 10 hours; handling for 6 hours; walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and fingering for 5 hours; reaching below waist, twisting, and feeling for 2 hours; sitting, climbing, balancing, crawling, reaching over head, and talking for 1 hour.
Frequent: standing, kneeling, stretching, reaching, gripping tools or objects, and bending at the waist. Regular: walking, crouching, and twisting while standing. Occasional: sitting, crawling, and twisting while sitting for 1 hour or less.
Lifting: car parts from 1–50 lbs for 10 hours (10–25 lbs frequently, 25–50 lbs regularly).
Pushing: hand trucks up to 100 lbs; wrenches up to 10 lbs. Pulling: 10–25 lbs frequently, 25–50 lbs regularly, over 50 lbs occasionally, cables up to 100 lbs regularly.
Requires indoor work 8 hours/day and outdoor work 2 hours/day. Exposure to heat, humidity, moving machinery, welding fumes, dust, gases, noise, hot and cold temperatures, automotive equipment, oil, grease, vibrations, and occasional solitary work. Hazard exposure: mechanical from tools, electrical from welders, radiant energy from torches.
Working Schedule10‑hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, with occasional overtime on Fridays.
Reporting RelationshipReports to line supervisor or work group supervisor.
