Group Exercise Instructor – YMCA of Florida’s First Coast

Instruct group classes, provide excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

• Lead group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
• Conduct energizing, fun, safe, and educational classes.
• Build effective relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
• Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
• Keep accurate class attendance records.
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures; respond to emergency situations, report all incidents to direct supervisor, and provide any necessary follow‑up.
• Improve the health and well‑being of the community the YMCA serves.
• Assist in equipment cleaning and maintenance, inform the coordinator of any breakage or items needing replacement.
• Introduce yourself before each class and welcome all new participants.
• Address questions and concerns of YMCA members with exceptional service and ensure adequate follow through in a timely manner.
• Secure any substitute needed for instruction of scheduled class that cannot be taught.
• Attend staff meetings and any other training as assigned.
• Actively participate in the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign.
• Perform any other duties assigned.
• Ensure all First Coast YMCA standards and best practices are implemented and followed.
• Apply YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
• Ensure the health and safety of all members/guests.
• Inspect physical space to ensure the safety, orderliness, sanitation and cleanliness of facilities.

• Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
• Certification in areas of expertise.
• YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire (available through Leadership University).
• At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes (preferred).

Ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.

Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction).

Acceptable hearing (with or without correction).

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Ability to audition and perform skills necessary to lead others in a group fitness environment.
