Athletic Coach - Assistant Cheerleading - Southside Middle School

Job Summary: Administers all aspects of sports‑specific activity within the District and individual school's Athletic Department policy, as well as the guidelines of the Florida High School Athletics Association and the National Federation of High Schools.

Essential Functions (Percent of Job):

  • Announce and enforce rules pertaining to conditioning of players and training rules affecting health and safety, and ensure required documents (EL2, EL3, insurance verification, sportsmanship contract, birth certificate, etc.) are complete.
  • Attend mandatory FHSAA rules clinics and Gateway Conference meetings; pursue professional development through coaching clinics.
  • Work with the athletic director to establish physical examinations and verify that athletes complete the DCPS Athletic Health Examination Form before being issued equipment or allowed to practice.
  • Conduct and supervise at least one fundraising activity for the sport.
  • Ensure team supervision at all times, including locker room and transportation after practices and competitions.
  • Know and enforce Title IX, FHSAA, and County School Board regulations.
  • Monitor academic progress of each team member weekly.
  • Organize practice and game responsibilities clearly; assign duties for coaching throughout the program.
  • Report injuries to the athletic trainer or Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program; complete required incident reports and secure medical approval before return to play.
  • Support and actively participate in improving the athletic program and overall educational program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Experience: Previous experience preferred as an athletic coach or in the coaching arena.
  • Certifications & Licenses: Required coaching courses including First Aid, CPR, Sudden Cardiac Arrest and Concussion in Sports (NFHS), AED training, Florida Department of Education Certificate (Athletic Coaching).
  • Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (KSAs):
    • Knowledge of the sport and associated strategies.
    • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
    • Strong leadership, creative problem‑solving, time management, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to conduct staff meetings and oversee tryouts, practices, team meetings, and contests.
    • Model professional behavior for student‑athletes at all times.
    • Motivation skills to inspire student‑athletes to achieve their best effort and results.
