The Roadway Foreman directs and manages construction tasks and activities of craft and labor crews to build roadways. The role ensures safety, quality, production, and environmental goals are met while supervising personnel, equipment, scheduling, and budgeting.
Responsibilities- Maintain NPDES weekly report.
- Lead pre‑task meetings, enforce safety rules, and recommend corrective actions.
- Monitor soil types and atmospheric levels in enclosed excavations, provide excavation instructions, and safeguard against cave‑ins.
- Use judgment to troubleshoot and problem‑solve on the job site.
- Complete daily Foreman Report, track payroll records, and submit them accurately.
- Read plans, specifications, blueprints, and job orders to identify material and equipment needs, and assist employees with site problems.
- Supervise crews, develop work schedules, recommend personnel actions, review timesheets, and ensure new employees are oriented and tools tracked.
- Assign work tasks, provide on‑site instruction, and inspect work for compliance with plans and specifications.
- Train employees on proper equipment use, quality control, cost containment, productivity, communication, and housekeeping.
- Receive and transmit instructions from Superintendents to the crew, and interface with engineers and subcontractors.
- Act as first point of contact in a superintendent’s absence, interfacing with inspectors, EPA, OSHA, and visitors.
- Participate in the development of the Four‑Week Look‑Ahead schedules with Superintendents.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience in mass grading, finishing slopes and ditches, and/or highway work.
- Experience with NCDOT projects and a Level II EC Certification is a plus.
- Experience working with underground utilities, sewer/storm drain, and water pipes is a plus.
- Experience with Trimble/Topcon GPS.
- Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal ability.
- Capability to lift construction materials exceeding 50 lbs.
- Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
- Ability to evaluate workers’ performance and workmanship accurately.
- Skills in calculating proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Capacity to work independently, within a team, and lead a team.
- Valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent (education and experience acceptable).
