Performs technical work inspecting buildings and equipment to detect fire hazards and enforce state and local regulations, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Deputy Planning and Development Director.

- Inspect buildings and fire protection equipment to ensure compliance with NC Fire Code;
- Reviews fire protection plans;
- Conducts trainings in fire prevention, as needed;
- Participates in plan review of new construction and redevelopment projects;
- Conducts final compliance inspections of new and existing buildings;
- Oversees semi-annual school inspections and performs required inspections;
- Researches and interprets Fire Code questions and inquiries;
- Participates on the Technical Review Committee to review new development projects;
- Responds to citizen and contractor inquiries on Fire Code related issues;
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer;
- Performs related tasks as required or assigned.
Thorough knowledge of the North Carolina Fire Code and related, appendixes, rules, and regulations; knowledge of materials, methods and appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings; ability to plan, coordinate, and participate in fire activities; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form; firmness and tact in enforcing fire codes; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, government officials and the general public.

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in fire prevention, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a Level I Standard Fire Certificate and ability to obtain a Level II Standard Fire Certificate and a Level I Standard Building Certificate within the first 36 months of employment.
- Valid driver's license.
Compensation will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.
