The EMS Captain is responsible for direct and indirect management, supervision, and support of EMS operations. The EMS Captain responds to high acuity calls and applies advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies when necessary to assist with patient care. The EMS Captain provides leadership on scene of major incidents. The EMS Captain exercises continuous supervision over all field staff assigned to a geographical region.

Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Battalion Chief.

  • Facilitates a safe work environment where employees are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.
  • Manages performance and completes annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Evaluates day-to-day operations and system performance through review of staffing, CAD, and other response information.
  • Gathers, assesses, and transitions situational awareness into strategies and functional assignments.

  • Establishes expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of the EMS System with assigned employees.
  • Evaluates employee performance through direct observation and review of clinical and operational reports in accordance with established policies, procedures, protocols, and expectations.
  • Provides necessary progressive discipline, including coaching and other formal measures.
  • Takes Command of a scene and effectively operates within and with a full understanding of the Incident Command System.
  • Participates in the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) working closely with the Training Chief.
  • Performs all functions of a Paramedic, when required.
  • Performsassignedfunctionsasa Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member,ifappointedorvolunteer.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledgeable of Onslow County EMS system, geographical area of the County, subdivisions and other key locations. Maintains knowledge of current EMS Division policies, County policies, and North Carolina OEMS regulations. Knowledge of emergency care procedures and ability to evaluate the patient's conditions and properly render the appropriate treatment set forth in the established patient care protocols, with or without physicians' direction.

Skilled in the operations of an emergency vehicle, using knowledge and skills in driving to avoid hazards or to keep from becoming a hazard. Thorough knowledge of laws, rules, regulations, techniques and practices involved in the operation of emergency medical services. Thorough knowledge of emergency medical theories, principles and practices. Willingness to learn and carry out set policies. Analytical skill required for emergency medical services as well as analysis organization, management, and training issues and trends.

Ability to plan, organize and supervise. Ability to plan and organize treatment in emergency situations. Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers, EMS volunteers, hospital and medical community professionals, other emergency agencies and the public. Ability to exercise sound judgment and make effective patient decision and accurate paramedic medical diagnosis and treatment decisions.
