The Lead Scientist advises the Indonesia Leadership Team members on broad and complex aspects of science‑based initiatives. The scientist develops and monitors the implementation of a strategic science vision for applied Conservation Science that is aligned with the Global Challenges Global Solutions Framework. The Lead Scientist helps establish the Program as a leading conservation partner in Indonesia; helps shape conservation priorities, projects, and long‑term conservation strategies;

builds scientific and technical capacity, especially in economic valuation of natural resources and marine protected areas; and develops partnerships with key institutions to strengthen the science‑based approach, emphasizing conservation economics and monetizing the value of protected areas.

The scientist recommends growth, focusing on green growth and blue growth, and strengthens capacity to deliver and resolves technical issues.

Works closely with project staff to ensure work plans and projects succeed while developing and disseminating viability criteria and threat abatement tools and guidelines for critical systems and communities. Conducts scientific surveys and research, records data, writes reports, and develops proposals to administer and coordinate conservation programs within the Indonesia Program. Ensures the quality of science work, research, and innovation solutions and publishes findings to add to the body of Conservation Science knowledge and support TNC organizational goals.

Responsible for refining and implementing the Science Capacity Building Strategy document and formulating key performance indicators for science delivery. Liaises with other scientists within the Asia Pacific region and Global Strategies, with a strong emphasis on marine, fisheries, and land, as well as the State Chapters. Reports to the Indonesia Program Country Director and is based in Jakarta.

• PhD in a science‑related field and 8 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
• Experience building relationships.
• Experience conducting original research and publishing in peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
• Experience with fundraising and/or writing grants and research proposals.
• Experience designing, organizing, and directing complex multi‑project strategic initiatives and leading a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Experience synthesizing and integrating research findings and lessons learned.
• Excellent ability to communicate and present next steps and strategy to senior management.
