Professional Staff Nurse (Full-Time) - 4D/Med Surg

UPMC Chautauqua seeks a Full‑Time Professional Staff Nurse to join our dedicated team on Unit 4D, a 30‑bed Med‑Surg unit with some stable pediatric admissions. The role requires variable availability—days, evenings, overnights, every other weekend, and rotating holidays.

About the Unit

Unit 4D provides post‑operative adult care and care for medical conditions. Patients include orthopedic, bariatric, urological, and general surgeries. The team delivers wound care, wound vacs, and fast‑paced, collaborative care.

Here’s how we support our nurses

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of adult learning principles and apply them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provide detailed teaching to effectively guide patients through episodes of care and transition to other levels of care.
  • Apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship‑Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulate daily goals and care plans with patient partnership, considering individual needs holistically.
  • Practice critical thinking to identify clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues, and advocate for changes in patient care and unit practices through solid communication skills.
  • Participate in unit‑based shared governance, goal setting, and quality improvement efforts, supporting change and transition processes to improve patient care.
  • Enhance patient satisfaction and quality of care by utilizing research and evidence‑based practice.
Required
  • Demonstrate abilities to provide care appropriate to the ages of patients in the unit, understanding growth principles and assessing age‑specific care needs.
  • Zero to two years of experience; BSN preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non‑physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively within a complex environment, handle multiple priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities related to patient care.
  • Critical thinking needed to lead others in nursing process application; mobility and visual manual dexterity.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
  • UPMC offers various flexible shift programs—including primarily night or weekend shifts with a premium. Employees transitioning into these programs must have at least six months of experience and may need orientation during regular hours. Please alert recruiter if interested.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement.
  • CPR required within AHA standards (didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire.
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure exam within 6 months of hire or one year of graduation (whichever first). UPMC requires GNs to take exam within 6 months or risk termination or demotion.
  • New York SCR application due within first week of hire.
  • PALS within one year of hire or transfer.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR;
    Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS);
    Registered Nurse (RN) or Temporary Practice Permit (TPP); NYS Staff Exclusion List (NYSEL); NYS Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse (NYSCR).
