Performs responsible semi‑skilled work operating a front‑end loader, skid steering and forklift in the movement and separation of recyclable material at the city’s Material Recovery Facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

• Operates equipment loading recyclables onto conveyors, loading into baler hopper, dumping recycling baskets and loading scrap metal, white goods, and glass into roll‑offs.
• Operates loader and skid steer loading recyclables onto conveyors, moving cardboard, wood and metals into appropriate areas and moving recycling baskets in and out daily; roll‑off containers and compactor.
• Operates rotary broom to sweep and scrub tipping floor.
• Operates forklift transporting and loading bales of recyclables onto semi‑trailers.
• Checks recycling and residual baskets under sorting lines and replaces when full.
• Services equipment by greasing and blow out filters, does pre‑trip inspections daily.
• Operates light equipment and assists on the sorting line when needed.
• Able to communicate and properly use handheld radio.
• Operates balers, strappers.
• Fuel equipment as needed.
• Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
• Participates in special projects and other duties as assigned

• Experience with heavy equipment is required.
• Must be able to lift to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• Must have good driving and safety records.
• Valid Driver’s License in North Carolina or another state.

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Experience as a Mechanic
• NC CDL

Hearing/Speaking – Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co‑workers, citizens, and applicants.

• Acuity, far – clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle or addressing an audience.
• Acuity, near – clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Must be able to see work‑related business documents close at hand.
