Statement of Purpose
Primarily responsible for phlebotomy procedures. Assists in clerical duties of the department, processing specimens, and unpacking supplies.
Job SummaryFull‑time position. 72 hours every two-week pay period. Monday–Friday with variable hours, work on every 4th weekend, no holidays, and no call.
Job Functions- Collect venous and capillary blood specimens according to laboratory protocol.
- Maintain phlebotomy tray and work area to minimize exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- Provide appropriate laboratory services to infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics in accordance with established performance standards.
- Assist with inventory and receiving supplies.
- Perform clerical duties, such as filing patient reports and maintaining workload statistics.
- Process specimens for in-house testing or send to reference laboratories.
- Maintain interpersonal skills, initiative, and attitude.
- Adhere to hospital and departmental policies, exposure control, and safety policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Perform urine drug screens (certification provided) and breath alcohol testing, including drawing legal blood alcohols.
- Preparation & Training
- Certification as a phlebotomist desirable; ability to be trained on the job.
- BLS certified for CPR.
- Required to attend Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.
- Work Experience
- Previous experience in a medical setting with basic knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
- Attendance
- Punctual and regular attendance; expected to report on time and remain for the entire work schedule.
- Independent Judgement
- Understand patient needs, prioritize patient drawing, select best specimen collection method, and seek guidance from lab techs or Lab Manager when needed.
- Contacts with Others
- Frequent contact with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and co‑workers, often under critical situations.
- Responsibility for Welfare of Others
- Obtain specimens critical to patient care while minimizing exposure to blood borne pathogens and hazardous chemicals.
- Mental/Visual Effort
- Speak and write English understandably; read and comprehend department policy manual; maintain visual acuity and color perception necessary for routine lab procedures.
- Working Conditions
- Exposure to blood borne pathogens; observe standard precautions; use aseptic techniques; handle emergency or crisis situations; work beyond normal hours, holidays, and weekends as necessary.

- Provide a vehicle for transportation and hold a valid North Dakota driver’s license.
