The City of Janesville’s Engineering Division is looking for an enthusiastic Civil, Environmental, Construction Engineering or Engineering Technician student to join our team this summer. Under the supervision of the Assistant City Engineer, this seasonal position is designed to build on skills learned in the classroom by offering hands‑on experience and exposure to a number of infrastructure projects within our community.
The position consists of a 3‑ to 4‑month summer internship, extending from mid‑May 2026 (upon completion of spring semester) through August 2026. The Engineering Division is involved with designing and overseeing construction of over $20,000,000 of public infrastructure work which includes approximately 12 miles of street rehabilitation with various sanitary sewer, watermain, and storm sewer improvements.
Reports to:
Assistant City Engineer
Has regular work contact with City employees and construction contractors.
Supervises:
Has no regular supervisory duties.
- Performs construction administration, oversight, and staking of municipal infrastructure such as streets, sanitary sewer, watermain, and storm sewer.
- Uses mobile ArcGIS data collection technology to assess conditions of public infrastructure such as stormwater management facilities, greenbelts, and outfalls.
- Assists with traffic counts, bike/pedestrian counts, field data collection, traffic safety studies, and road condition ratings.
- Interacts and collaborates with technicians, engineers, project managers, contractors, and the public regarding project related issues.
- Assists with CADD drafting, GIS data entry, scanning documents, and other office related tasks.
- Other duties as assigned or required.
- Have completed a minimum of two semesters of college prior to starting the position.
- Be pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or Construction Engineering, civil engineering technology, land surveying, construction technology, geography, or related field from a college or university.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license is required.
- Knowledge: General understanding of construction practices.
- Skills: Communicating with project team members, math, and computer applications. Skilled in Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent organizational, analytical, judgement, and problem‑solving skills.
- Abilities: Ability to work independently; learn mobile ArcGIS data collection technology, CADD software, and survey equipment; interact/respond to citizen inquiries; operate City vehicles and equipment safely; maintain a valid driver’s license.
