Safety Engineer
Description
SHINE Technologies is seeking a Nuclear Safety Analysis Engineer for our used nuclear fuel (UNF) Recycling product line. The US has more than 95,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel and nowhere to put it. This role develops and applies the nuclear safety analysis that lets us turn it back into energy: transient and accident analysis, dose analysis, process hazard analysis (HAZOPs, FMEAs, etc.),
and integrated safety analysis that demonstrate the Recycling Pilot facility meets our safety goals and the regulator’s requirements, from preliminary design through licensing and into operation.
The job takes judgment as much as method. Safety analysis at SHINE is expected to be right, not merely conservative: the analyst chooses assumptions they can defend, understands where the margin is and what it costs, and tells the design team when a requirement is not earning its keep as clearly as when a hazard is under-controlled.
Hybrid work arrangement will be considered. Our key facilities are in Janesville, Wisconsin and Fitchburg, WI. Candidates may be asked to travel occasionally for team meetings or onsite engagements, depending on business needs.
The base salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Own the Safety Analysis
- Perform system analyses of anticipated transients and postulated accidents to demonstrate that safety and licensing requirements are satisfied.
- Perform nuclear calculations to determine the total amount of material at risk as input into release calculations, using industry-standard codes such as MCNP and SCALE.
- Perform radiological and chemical dose calculations for normal and accidental releases.
- Lead or support Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) activities including hazard evaluations (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA), process hazard analyses (PHA), and accident sequence development.
- Review Quality Classification Forms that determine whether equipment is credited in the safety analysis, and challenge classifications the analysis does not support.
- Own the safety analysis documentation for the Pilot facility, including dose release calculations, HAZOP and FMEA reports, and the ISA Summary or its equivalent.
- Perform hand calculations using first principles to support and validate analysis results.
- Perform code benchmarking and validation analyses to support code qualification and methodology development.
- Choose analysis assumptions that are defensible rather than merely conservative. Document the reasoning and quantify the margin they create.
- Tell the design team where the analysis shows a requirement can be relaxed, as well as where a hazard needs more control.
- Contribute to licensing documents for NRC (or DOE) review and approval that describe how the suite of nuclear analysis codes will be applied along with inputs, models, and correlations to establish the design bases.
- Support the licensing team in responding to regulator questions on the safety analysis.
- The safety analyses needed for the Pilot facility construction permit application (or equivalent) are complete, with assumptions and margins documented.
- The analysis has been used to remove or relax at least one requirement that could not be justified, with the reasoning documented.
- Analysis methods and codes are qualified and documented to a standard the licensing team can carry to the regulator.
- Evidence of owning a safety analysis from method to regulator: has authored analyses that went into a licensing submittal or safety basis document and defended them…
