Research Scientist
SHINE Technologies is seeking an R&D Chemist I to support the development of innovative solutions for medical isotope separation and purification, nuclear fuel recycling, and tritium handling research and development.
Base salary range: $60,000 - $65,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package.
- Prepare samples and solutions according to general chemical principles.
- Contribute to teams working on targeted R&D projects, including radio chemical separations.
- Learn, operate, and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation (ICP‑MS, LSC, HPLC) to analyze samples generated within the Chemistry department and across other SHINE divisions.
- Perform emerging experiments as needed.
- Radiochemical Separations:
Perform liquid‑liquid and column chromatography separations to purify metal ions, focusing on the recovery of actinides and fission products from complex matrices. - Gas Handling:
Support experiments involving hydrogen isotopes (e.g., tritium, deuterium), develop materials for tritium storage and purification, and separate Xe and Kr. - Analytical Instrumentation:
Operate advanced radio analytical tools, including ICP‑MS, LSC for beta‑emitters, and HPLC. - Prototyping & Scale‑up:
Assist in the design and operation of bench‑top and pilot‑scale systems for chemical processing and off‑gas treatment. - Documentation:
Develop and modify Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for handling radioactive materials and document experimental results in detailed test plans.
- B.S. in chemistry, radiochemistry, or a relevant scientific discipline.
- 0‑1 year of experience in a chemistry laboratory.
- Experience with spectroscopic or chromatographic techniques.
- Willingness to handle radioactive materials and learn proper use of radio analytical instruments.
- Hands‑on attitude and eagerness to learn new technology.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Remain in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for extended periods.
- Move within facility environments, including accessing testing areas and operating instrumentation.
- Handle standard laboratory equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work may occasionally take place in controlled radiation areas under supervision and within regulatory exposure limits.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE), including full Tyvek suit with ventilated hood, lab coats, safety glasses, and dosimeters.
- Work involves moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises.
- Follow basic safety precautions related to hazards or physical risks.
- Shift‑work schedules and occasional extended hours may be required.
- Obtain confined space entry certification.
- Exposure to arc flash and high voltage usage.
- Participate in site emergency plan drills.
