Guidance Counselor

Position Summary

The High School Guidance Counselor supports the academic, social‑emotional, and postsecondary success of all students. The counselor provides comprehensive guidance services aligned to the district’s student support framework, including academic advising, college and career planning, mental health referral support, and coordination of school‑wide programs that promote graduation and readiness for life beyond high school. This position requires strong collaboration with administrators, teachers, families, and community partners.

Essential

Responsibilities Academic Advising & Graduation Planning

• Guide students in course selection, scheduling, and academic planning to ensure successful progress toward graduation requirements and pathways.
• Monitor student grades, attendance, and credits; identify students at risk and help develop support plans.
• Assist students in understanding diploma options, dual credit opportunities, AP courses, CTE pathways, and work‑based learning.
• Collaborate with teachers and administrators to support students enrolled in enrichment, remediation, or alternative programs (e.g., credit recovery, Wildcat Academy).

College, Career & Postsecondary Readiness

• Provide individualized support for college and career planning.
• Coordinate college admissions advising—applications, essays, recommendations, transcript requests, and scholarship searches.
• Facilitate student access to workforce development options such as apprenticeships, internships, industry certifications, military exploration, and CTE programming.
• Plan and implement college‑ and career‑readiness events such as financial aid nights, career fairs, and campus visits.

Assessment, Data & Program Management

• Support the administration of standardized assessments (PSAT, SAT, ASVAB, AP exams, etc.) and assist with data interpretation.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records, scheduling data, and graduation tracking reports.
• Use data dashboards, academic performance reports, attendance records, and graduation progress indicators to inform decision‑making and student support.
• Support compliance with state and federal requirements related to student plans, 504 accommodations, credit audits, and postsecondary reporting.

Collaboration & Communication

• Serve as a liaison among students, families, teachers, administrators, and outside agencies.
• Communicate regularly with families regarding academic progress, scheduling, college planning, and available supports.
• Participate on school leadership teams, crisis response teams, and other committees as assigned.
• Contribute to a welcoming, student‑centered counseling office environment.

Qualifications

• Valid state license/certification in School Counseling.
• Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development, academic advising, and postsecondary planning.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to use student information systems, scheduling platforms, and data tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with college and career readiness frameworks, graduation pathways, and CTE programs.
