Welder

Job purpose

To carry out maintenance, modification, overhauling and installation activities on the mechanical machinery in accordance with standard operating procedures and industry best practices, HSE guidelines and quality standards to attain cost-effectiveness, functionality and reliability.

• Carry out required welding/fitting/fabrication work according to outage procedures/ as directed by Technical Field Advisor, Field Service Engineer or Outage manager to facilitate critical equipment overhaul in the foreseen timeframe.
• Monitor and ensure the working condition of all Welding tools and machinery in the toolroom/tool container and report non-conformances to Mechanical Supervisor to facilitate effective replacement/repair of all assets as per set Quality/ HSE standards.
• Respond to on-site failures together with the outage team and implement corrective actions in adherence with procedures and guidelines to reduce downtime and maximize functionality of equipment.
• Perform on-site welding during outages on Steam turbines, Gas turbines, Generators, Steam valves and their auxiliaries.
• Ensure proper / required pre- and post weld procedures are in place as well as implemented during the welding of any material.
• Work together with the outage manager and / or field service engineer to prepare for any
• Read and understand technical manuals, mechanical diagrams and fabrication drawings and apply the knowledge to carry out efficient and correct welding work, in support of the mechanical maintenance to machinery in the assigned area.
• Execute complex fitting procedures on High Chrome alloys, Inconel, P91 and coordinate pre- and post-weld heat treatment and controlled cooldown as required.

• Work timely, independently and diligently on assigned jobs and report abnormalities to Outage manager or Field Service Engineer.
• Guide semi-skilled helpers and cleaners to support the welding work
• Work safely and understand site hazards
• Check the necessary stock levels of consumables, welding rods, Welding filler, gases and welding PPE to enable the Outage manager’s effective inventory control and timely re-ordering.

• Update the maintenance logbook and record details of work carried out including daily progress report, filling out measurement protocols, defaults, problems, various findings and conditions of all machines to ensure timely availability of information and organised referencing.
• Sign the daily site-, meeting- and Toolbox talk attendance sheets
• Contribute in the identification and implementation of change initiatives, programmes and projects in line with the organisation’s standards.
• Adhere to all relevant organisational and departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures and instructions so that work is carried out to the required standard and in a consistent manner.

• Adhere to all relevant health, safety, security and environmental procedures, instructions and controls so that the safety of employees and environmental compliance can be guaranteed.

• Perform any other duties which the outage manager may require to be carried out.

• A technical certificate / Associate’s Diploma in technical Field, with a specialization in Welding or material science or equivalent through experience
• 6G welding certification on GTAW/SMAW process for CS/SS/Inconel 617/P91-F22
• 3-5 years’ solid experience in mechanical maintenance as a technician in installation, maintenance and repair of rotating equipment and auxiliaries in an industrial plant or field service environment.

• Practical Knowledge of relevant plant equipment such as gas turbines, steam turbines, valves, pumps, exchangers.
• Practical knowledge of welding principles including but not limited to process, NDT, heat treatment, material differences.
• Awareness of HSE & quality standards.
