- Check the status of your application
- Verify your certificate’s expiration date for timely renewal
Apply for a Missouri Substitute Certificate
- Visitwww.dese.mo.gov and follow the instructions in theEducator Certification System Help Guide.
- A $50 processing fee is required.
- Send original transcripts fromallinstitutions you've attended to:

Faxed, scanned, emailed, or photocopied transcripts are not accepted.
If You Don’t Have 60 College Credit Hours
- You can complete a 20-hour online course through DESE. Access the coursehere .
Fingerprint and Background Clearance
- Before obtaining a certificate, you must complete a fingerprint/background clearance. The processing fee is $43.50

- If you plan to substitute in multiple districts or have questions, contact us before registering to avoid paying for additional fingerprints.
- Once registered, visit any fingerprinting location in Missouri to complete the process.

- Be interviewed
- Complete all employee documents
- Receive your substitute badge
- Appointments may take up to one hour.
- Driver’s License
- Second form of (Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, or valid US Passport)
- Voided check or bank letter with routing and account numbers
