Public Notice – DEA Criminal Investigator

Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) invites applications for Criminal Investigator positions (GL-1811/7, 9, 11). These positions are available to U.S. Citizens and will be posted on USAJobs on 12 Jan 2026 and 6 Apr 2026.

Overview

Criminal Investigators conduct complex investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities. Investigators prepare investigative reports, deliver briefings to senior personnel, identify and apprehend traffickers, gather and analyze evidence, and testify in court or before grand juries. Additional duties may be assigned based on individual experience.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct complex criminal investigations targeting narcotics and drug‑related activities.
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Identify and apprehend drug traffickers; arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.
  • Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means.
  • Testify on behalf of the federal government in court or before grand juries.
Training

Applicants who have not completed previous federal law enforcement training must attend a 16‑week residential Basic Agent Training (BAT) program at the DEA Training Academy, Quantico, Virginia. Current or former 1811 applicants who have successfully completed a federal criminal investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT).

Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance.
  • Must sign a mobility agreement for relocation to any DEA facility.
  • Pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical exam required.
  • Full‑scope polygraph required; reciprocity possible for 1811 applicants.
  • Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/59.
  • Age 21‑36; veterans may have age preference.
  • Valid state driver’s license required.
  • Random drug testing and 1‑year or 2‑year trial period.
  • Complete 16‑20 week BAT (or 3‑week transition for 1811).
Compensation

Base salary ranges from $ to $ (or other ranges). Full relocation expenses paid for individuals transferring from another federal position.
