Position: Capitol Police Officer (Part-time)
Job Summary

The Missouri Capitol Police is seeking a dedicated law enforcement professional for the part-time Officer rank.

This person must be willing to provide quality service, uphold a strong work ethic and accountability, and demonstrate a commitment to achieving our mission.

Missouri Capitol Police is a unique full-service law enforcement agency serving a community of state employees, elected officials, and the public. Our jurisdiction includes the 72-acre Capitol Complex and state office buildings in Cole County. Missouri Capitol Police provide services to more than 18,000 state employees and to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Our mission is to provide quality service that ensures the safety of the community we serve, guided by professionalism, fairness, personal honor, and integrity. We assist sworn personnel in performing general police duties, processes, and operations to ensure public safety and building security by enforcing state laws. We serve a community that includes state legislators, elected officials, and state employees, ensuring safe conditions so officials can fulfill their oath of office to all Missourians.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide protection for people and property for the Missouri Capitol Police at the Capitol Building.
  • Assist during fire evacuations and hazardous weather.
  • Assist with special events and assignments as required.
  • Investigate complaints and make arrests for violations of state laws, as needed.
  • Prepare reports on state law and security regulation violations as needed.
  • Operate and monitor intrusion and fire alarm systems.
  • Operate assigned police department equipment.
  • Participate in all mandatory in-service training and policy reviews.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of law enforcement policies, techniques, and Missouri statutes governing criminal law and arrest procedures.
  • Ability to learn the security measures in place and use the security equipment located at the Capitol building.
  • Perform effectively as a member of a team, carrying out the Capitol Police mission and the community policing philosophy.
  • Sound decision-making and the ability to act independently during emergencies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Deal courteously and professionally with the community we serve.
  • Present an overall professional image.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment to respond quickly and calmly under stress and when making daily decisions.
  • Maintain peace and order during potentially violent or disruptive incidents.
  • Ability to use computer systems as required by job responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of report-writing methods and the ability to write police reports effectively and efficiently when needed.
  • Ability to administer first aid.
  • Proficiency in firearms, defensive tactics, and other required law enforcement certifications.
  • Ability to work shifts, including holidays, weekends, and special events, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of the current Missouri Class A or B Peace Officer license issued by the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
  • Ability to maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
  • At least one (1) year of relevant law enforcement experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate must possess:

  • Ability to pass an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Missouri Capitol Police prior to appointment.
