Business Development, Client Relationship Manager
The Business Development Manager will expand Union Pay’s merchant network and enhance card acceptance in the U.S. market. This role focuses on identifying strategic partnerships, driving sales growth, providing tailored payment solutions, and ensuring high merchant satisfaction. It also requires active field engagement, including regular visits to onsite merchants to understand real market conditions and uncover acceptance barriers.
The manager will lead merchant engagement, conduct signage audits and training, handle on-site operational follow-ups, and remain agile in responding to changing market needs. In addition, the role involves conducting data analysis to assess acceptance quality, identify merchant issues, and support data‑driven decisions for optimizing offline merchant performance.
Job Responsibilities- Identify potential partnerships to increase Union Pay card acceptance. Lead sales and services discussions with strategic merchants and be responsible for all activities related to the opportunity.
- Consultatively identify and prioritize merchant needs and craft customized solutions that grow the merchants’ business and increase merchant satisfaction with Union Pay products/services.
- Analyze and monitor ongoing industry trends to develop and implement pre‑emptive strategies and plans for potential partners.
- Be responsible for achieving sales and growth objectives for Union Pay eCommerce Solutions, in a portfolio of strategic merchant and partner relationships.
- Actively explore new business opportunities through field scouting, onsite discovery, and direct engagement with offline merchants to capture first‑hand business insights.
- Develop business strategies based on frontline feedback, local competitive dynamics, and acceptance barriers identified in the market.
- Be the single point of contact for merchants. Provide a high degree of customer care with a pro‑active, solutions‑oriented mindset. Identify and foster strategic relationships within merchant organizations that will elevate partner discussions to focus on growth; conduct regular audit on Union Pay signage.
- Identify merchant investment & partnership opportunities that will jointly benefit merchants and Union Pay. Work with key merchants in expanding signage placement and conducting merchant training.
- Handle hands‑on operational follow‑up at merchant locations, including terminal checks, routing verification, and acceptance testing. Adapt quickly to dynamic market needs, addressing operational blockers and supporting merchants through onsite troubleshooting.
- Work closely with other teams to develop payment solutions products, marketing and promotion plans to increase transaction volume.
- Conduct quantitative analysis on merchant performance, including authorization rates, decline patterns, MCC segmentation, and BIN‑level behavior.
- Diagnose merchant‑level technical issues using data and provide recommendations on gateway routing, acquirer configurations, and onboarding optimization.
- Lead contract negotiations and ensure delivery of all aspects of program initiatives including service levels, management reporting, marketing programs, etc.
- Conduct systematic research and mapping of key business districts to evaluate merchant density, category distribution, and payment environment.
- Increase acceptance rate and signage coverage within priority districts through coordinated onboarding, signage rollout, and targeted merchant engagement.
- Develop localized marketing plans and partnership initiatives tailored to key districts to strengthen Union Pay’s presence and consumer visibility.

- Bachelor’s degree or above, preferably in business‑related majors.
- Prefer candidates with 2+ years of experience.
- Excellent business acumen and strategic thinking.
- Good communication and interpersonal skill.
- Able to navigate within a highly matrixed organization.
- Solid collaborative and influence management skills – leading successful client negotiations and creating mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize between business development and project execution tasks.
- A driver’s license is needed for customer development and maintenance.
