Job DescriptionThe Patient Care Technician (PCT) functions under the direct supervision of a professional nurse. The PCT functions as a member of the health care team and performs selected patient care activities under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, is responsible for identified critical unit support activities as directed. He/she performs specific duties and is considered an integral part of the nursing team.
He/she will assist the nurse in gathering information and making observations regarding the patient’s condition. PCTs are also expected to comply with hospital policies on confidentiality, infection control, and compassionate care. They are responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments, e.g., damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas, medical errors, etc. This per diem position is required to work a minimum of four shifts in a month / one weekend, and rotating holidays.
Required to work every other weekend and rotating holidays; no set schedules.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required within one year of hire.
- Enrolled in a Nursing Program, current EMT certification, Medical Assistant Certified, Phlebotomist Certified, EKG tech or equivalent.
- BLS certification through American Heart Association.
- Prior hospital experience preferred.
- Work under the direction of the RN to provide care to the patients on the unit.
- Utilizes communication skills, good interpersonal skills, time management, and problem‑solving skills.
- Able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment.
- Computer proficient knowledge and skill in computer software, including Electronic Medical Record charting, Microsoft Office Outlook, etc., and be familiar with office‑based/clinical electronic devices such as printers, scanners, fax machines, virtual conference tools, etc.
- A direct patient caregiver who assists patients with activities of daily living and provides care to patients including but not limited to: taking vital signs, EKGs, performing phlebotomy, assisting or providing patients with bedside care such as bathing, mouth care, skin care, feeding, serving prepared meals, and ambulating.
- Providing patient care, based on physical, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients in assigned service.
- Providing for effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions.
- Ongoing communication with patients and nursing colleagues regarding status of patient’s care.
- Participating in collaboration of our patient’s plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning.
- Maintains a safe and clean environment.
- Monitors patient safety.
- Provides stimulating activities for patients to participate in, i.e., board games, simple repetitive tasks, videos, etc.
- Provides companionship and conversation with the patient.
- Monitors patient activity at all times; recognizes emergent or potential emergent situations and responds appropriately.
- Seeks guidance from the primary nurse regarding current patient status and relates pertinent patient information back to the RN.
- Refers questionable issues to the RN/Charge nurse or designee for resolution.
- Performs appropriate cleaning/disinfecting of equipment as needed.
- Must be able to work independently and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
- Remains alert, observant, and attentive to patients at all times.
