Job Overview:
Medical technologists analyze samples of blood, tissue and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels or blood type; they may also search for specific microorganisms like bacteria or parasites. Preparing the samples for examination, using automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously, and accurately interpreting the results are all part of a medical technologist's job.
Responsibilities- Determines normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analyses of blood, urine, and spinal fluids
- The Medical Technologist processes and receives samples of blood, urine and body fluids
- Performs and interprets clinical laboratory tests, obtaining data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease
- Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells, using microscopic techniques and procedures
- Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group, type, and compatibility tests
- Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements and performing quality control; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques
- The Medical Technologist functions independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records all data obtained in the computer and/or log book
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies
- Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results
- Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, clinical laboratory science or similar degree in chemistry or biology with required semester hours and one year of training in a clinical laboratory as per CLIA and NJ DOH regulations
- Preferred: American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) or equivalent certification
- Current experience chemistry, hematology, microbiology or blood bank
