About the role
The Data Engineering AVP will join the AIG Data Office, responsible for major data delivery projects, functional enhancement, and serve as subject matter expert for technology selection. The role collaborates with business, product owners, and vendor partners to ensure successful delivery of data programs, support mission‑critical financial functions, lead technical resources, partner with AIG Cloud and architecture teams to deliver secure, resilient, scalable, and efficient cloud solutions, and drive long‑term objectives in a highly outsourced model.
Responsibilities- Lead technical delivery for large, mission‑critical initiatives, initially focusing on a multi‑year financial transformation program for Commercial insurance.
- Lead highly outsourced technical delivery teams to deliver data pipelines across functional areas, such as Finance / Actuarial systems on time, with high quality and continuous innovation.
- Establish best practice, guidance, and recommendations for data cloud solutions that are scalable, secure, resilient, efficient, and managed with operational excellence.
- Serve as a Technical Subject Matter Expert for data programs; guide technology selection with focus on efficiency, cost, and time to market.
- Recommend opportunities to modernize the data application portfolio to reduce operational cost and eliminate technical debt.
- Maintain industry / AIG security standards and SDLC compliance for delivery, develop data controls for internal and external requirements.
- Ensure high quality delivery across multi‑vendor teams spread across different geographies.
- Significant experience in application development, large data management solutions, and information handling at the enterprise level, possessing deep understanding of SDLC.
- In‑depth knowledge of architectural principles and services used to develop technical cloud strategy and review workload architectures; able to address high‑risk issues.
- Ability to manage large vendor teams across multiple geographies.
- Experience working in large, complex, multinational financial data environments.
- Insurance (ideally property and casualty) industry expertise in the data domain.
- Business acumen and understanding of insurance metrics and financials.
- Ability to work under challenging delivery situations fulfilling tight deadlines and budget constraints.
- Experience providing technical expertise and project leadership by conducting industry and market research and making recommendations regarding current and new domain knowledge and related technologies.
- Effective communication skills and facilitation experience with business and technology stakeholders to understand use cases and business needs.
- Ability to influence change and drive results; self‑motivated driver to identify issues and resolve them quickly.
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and ability to use Rally to track user stories.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, math, software engineering, computer engineering, or related field AND 10+ years’ experience in software development, data modeling or data engineering work in progressive leadership roles.
- Strong background in cloud infrastructure and AWS services.
- Knowledge of Snowflake, Oracle, DB2, SPARK, JAVA, Microsoft technologies.
- Familiarity transforming and analyzing structured, semi‑structured, and unstructured data.
- Experience with Git / Git Hub.
- Prior experience adopting AI accelerators for application development is a plus.
- Experience in Property and Casualty insurance with emphasis on commercial lines; prior experience in Finance discipline is a plus.
- Experience developing and operationalizing complex data engineering solutions.
- Leverage expert problem‑solving skills and techniques.
- Position will be based in the US.
- 15% travel required.
The base salary range for this position in Jersey City, NJ, is $126,000 – $171,000. AIG offers a comprehensive Total Rewards Program that extends beyond time spent at work to provide benefits focused on your health, wellbeing, and financial security, as well as professional development.
