Description
PATH Train Conductor
ResponsibilitiesConductors are responsible for managing the overall safe, on-time operation of their individual trains within the scope of the rules of the Transportation Department. The essential functions include, but are not limited to:
Communicate information to passengers, crew members, and other railroad employees in person and via onboard communication channels
Meeting and exceeding customer expectations by delivering great service.
Ensure compliance with all railroad and safety rules.
Ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administrative Regulations.
Operate train doors at station stops and assist customers on and off trains as necessary
Read, understand, comply with bulletin orders, general orders and other applicable rules of the Transportation Department
Manage emergency situations such as medical emergencies, equipment breakdowns and evacuation of passengers if necessary
Verbally direct the movement of trains
Provide professional customer service to passengers
Register for duty on time
Prepare trains for service and conduct complete train check before and after the train has reached its final destination to make sure all passengers have disembarked
Training Program:
Conductors undergo a training program of approximately 8 weeks. In this training, conductors will participate in a combination of classroom and field training and will receive assessments weekly. Conductors are required to successfully complete training and obtain the required Certification as mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). Failure to do so may result in termination from employment.
18 years of age or older
High School or Equivalency Diploma or GED Equivalent is required.
Two (2) years of verifiable work experience in customer service in roles such as security, transportation, operation or safety.
Must be available to work various shift schedules (can be up to 12 hours) including weekends, holidays and overnight shifts
Must be able to speak, read, and write English.
Ability to maintain alertness, awareness, and vigilance at all times
Must have the ability to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate, technical and non-technical information.
Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
Must work safely and efficiently and not cause a threat to the health and safety of self and others.
Must have the ability to perform continuous physical tasks for extended periods of time.
Must be able to lift 40lb weight, push, and pull. Conductors climb up the train, walk on the tracks, move from car to car while the train is in motion.
Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather
Safely and efficiently work, stand and walk on uneven ground and/or climbing on/off equipment in varying conditions.
Qualified candidates must be eligible to receive a Passenger Conductor Certification, pursuant to C.F.R. Part 242, and are expected to successfully pass the required pre-employment requirements, which include: medical exams including Hearing & Vision, interview panel, practical evaluation/physical agility test interviews, background check, and drug/alcohol screening.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Communicate with dispatchers, crew member and the control center via radio or other communication devices
Ideal candidates will present the following profile:
Work experience demonstrating skills in clear and effective verbal communication
Ability to maintain alertness, awareness, and vigilance at all times.
Professional experience working in capacity requiring initiative and responsibility. Some prior mechanical experience preferred.
Associate degree or technical/vocational training preferred.
Ability to work safely and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.

Written Examination The written examination is designed to measure knowledge in areas such as PATH procedure and rules for employees engaged in the operation of trains (Book of Rules) and basic signals.
Oral Examination consists of questions designed to measure such factors as personal qualifications and interest for this position, knowledge of railroad operations, and one's interpersonal and job-related skills.
Practical Examination is designed to measure practical skills and abilities related to performance of the duties in the position of Extra Engineer Switching (EES) and Conductor such as climbing on and/or off train cars and preparing train cars for operation.
