Support Assistant – Jessup Elementary
Anne Arundel County Public Schools – Temporary position at Jessup Elementary School (Preschool/PreK, elementary and secondary grade levels).
Position SummaryUnder the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, Temporary Support Assistants (TSA) assist teachers with the physical, emotional, behavioral, and instructional needs of students at the Preschool/PreK, elementary and secondary grade levels. Daily supervision of students occurs both within the school building and at work sites, including instructional tasks, self‑care support, and data collection based on individual student objectives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Participate in routine supervision of students throughout the school day in the building and/or on worksite/community environments – assist on/off bus, lift/push students, monitor entry/exit.
- Assist students with proper social behavior, personal hygiene and self‑help skills (e.g., toileting, feeding, grooming) during the school day and off‑site locations.
- Support students during instruction and curriculum tasks, implementing instructional plans and activities as designated by the job coach or teacher; provide reinforcement techniques to keep students focused.
- Observe and manage behavior of students in classrooms, lunch areas, playgrounds and other learning environments according to approved procedures.
- Observe and gather data regarding student performance on instructional and behavioral goals; provide data collection to the supervising teacher.
- Support students with social, emotional, and behavior concerns and implement behavior strategies and supports.
- Follow AACPS policies & procedures while assisting students and staff in the building and off‑site training activities or community‑based settings.
- Participate in professional development; attend workshops and in‑service training for specialized related care needs, seizures, disruptive behavior, etc. as provided by the Board of Education.
- Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education- High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
- Preferred:
Formal academic courses/training in child development with specific applications to the area of special education.
- None.
- Exercise considerable patience and work with students having physical, mental, emotional, and/or multiple disabilities.
- Punctual, regular, and predictable attendance essential.
- Employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
- Work and communicate effectively with diverse populations.
- Proficiency with business technology applications (Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint preferred).
- Hold or be eligible for Driver’s License (DL) Class C Non‑Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required.
- Daily access to reliable transportation.
- Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business within the scope of employment.
- Personal vehicle required.
Standing, walking, sitting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and driving occur under the requirements of the position. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Travel within the county (20% daily travel) to assist at locations (other schools, parks, libraries) as needed.
