Job Summary:

The Design Engineer:
Railway Geometry
is responsible for the geometric layout and alignment design of railway infrastructure, ensuring compliance with national and international railway engineering standards. The role involves geometric modelling, horizontal and vertical alignment design, turnout and track layout design, and integrating multidisciplinary engineering inputs to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible railway solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop horizontal and vertical rail alignments for new railways (passenger and freight), track upgrades, station layouts, siding layouts, marshalling yards, and material handling facilities.
  • Produce detailed designs including plan, long section, cross sections, rail profiles, can- and can't-deficiency calculations, curvature, gradients, and transition curves.
  • Design track layouts incorporating turnouts, crossovers, special trackwork, and interfaces with Signaling, OHTE and fixed structures.
  • Ensure geometric designs comply with applicable standards (e.g., Transnet, PRASA, EN, AREMA, Network Rail etc.).
  • Create 3D rail geometry models using relevant software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Open Rail Designer, BIM and Revit).
  • Develop and maintain the quality management system documentation.
  • Conduct design checks, quality reviews, and clash detection.
  • Collaborate with civil, structural, drainage, environmental, signaling, OHTE, and operations teams to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Provide technical input during feasibility, concept, preliminary, and detailed design stages.
  • Support multidisciplinary design reviews, workshops, and risk assessments.
  • Prepare and present engineering reports, cost estimates, design documentation, and technical specifications.
  • Provide engineering support through construction, including responding to RFIs, design adjustments, and site queries.
  • Contribute to project planning, design programme development, and progress reporting.
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
