Brief Description
Qualifications and requirements:The successful candidate must hold a professional degree in Electrical Engineering or Information Engineering, together with a formal qualification in Biomedical Engineering, and a Master’s qualification that renders the candidate immediately eligible for admission to a PhD programme. Applicants must demonstrate a clear intention to complete a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and to pursue sustained research activity in the field.A minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant industry experience is required, including substantive exposure to Biomedical Engineering and evidence of ongoing industry involvement in an engineering-related discipline. The candidate must demonstrate strong engineering competence, including but not limited to coding, software architecture, machine learning, and data-driven methodologies. Experience in regulatory processes, compliance, and clinical evaluation within the biomedical engineering domain is required, together with proven team leadership and project management skills.
Duties:The successful applicant will be required to:
• Interface with industry and university-related units such as Wits Innovation Centre, with a view to commercial exploitation of biomedical engineering developments within the school.
• Accreditation of the Biomedical Engineering research laboratories.
• Contribute towards the research output of the School (peer reviewed publications in DHET- approved journals) which in this position would primarily relate to the pursuit of a PhD on a part-time basis.
• Develop an academic program leading to an ECSA-accredited 4-year Biomedical Engineering degree.
• Formalisation of the Biomedical Engineering Research Group.
Subject to workload management, additional duties may be assigned from time to time including the following, as and when required by the school:
• Biomedical engineering laboratory management;
• Teaching courses such as Biomedical Measurement, Instrumentation and Imaging and Biomedical Signals, Systems and Control.
• Undertaking various administrative and teaching duties in the School;
• Conceptualising and supervising the capstone investigation and design projects of final yearundergraduate engineering students;
• Supervising postgraduate students in the School.
