We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Geotechnical Technician to join our dynamic operations team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of geotechnical instrumentation. This includes vibrating wire piezometers, inclinometers, data loggers, telemetry systems, and other field sensors used for monitoring slope stability, groundwater conditions, and structural performance.
The role also forms a key part of the In-Situ Testing division, undertaking advanced field testing such as Cone Penetration Testing (CPTu), Seismic Dilatometer Testing (SDMT), and Electronic Vane Shear Testing (eVST). The position requires strong technical capability, hands‑on field experience, and a proactive approach to problem‑solving in challenging site environments.
Responsibilities- Install geotechnical and structural monitoring instrumentation on local and international project sites.
- Perform in‑situ geotechnical testing, including Cone Penetration Testing (CPTu), Seismic Dilatometer Testing (SDMT), and Electronic Vane Shear Testing (eVST).
- Configure, test, diagnose, and maintain geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring systems.
- Assist with the setup, configuration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of data logging and telemetry systems.
- Collect, verify, interpret, and transmit accurate field data, ensuring data quality and integrity.
- Support preliminary data review and analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and testing issues.
- Prepare and maintain detailed field reports, installation records, and technical documentation.
- Comply with all safety procedures, site‑specific regulations, and company policies.
- Liaise effectively with clients, contractors, and project engineers during field operations.
- Maintain, manage, and ensure the proper use and calibration of tools and equipment.
- Grade 12 or NQF4 with Mathematics and Science.
- 1–3 years of fieldwork or instrumentation experience, preferably in the geotechnical field.
- Valid driver’s license (Code B) and willingness to travel extensively.
- Experience working on mine or construction sites.
- Comfortable working in outdoor and physically demanding environments.
- Basic understanding of data logging systems and telemetry.
- Good communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Computer literacy (Excel, Word, Outlook, and basic data handling).
- Experience with vibrating wire instruments, inclinometers, extensometers, etc.
- Familiarity with systems like Campbell Scientific, Geosense, and/or RST.
- Knowledge of geotechnical or structural monitoring applications.
- Safety certifications (e.g., Mine Induction, First Aid, Working at Heights, etc.).
