POSITION:
Mechanical and Structural Steel Designer

The successful candidate will be responsible for the structural design, detailing, and certification of steel structures
, including E-Houses and containerized substations. The role focuses on efficient, cost-optimized structural solutions aligned with South African and international standards, while supporting manufacturing, site assembly, and documentation.

• Design steel structures in accordance with SANS 10160 (Parts 1–8) and SANS 10162
  , including engineering certification of structures
• Apply a clear understanding of AWS D1.1 and AWS A2.4:2020 welding standards
• Generate General Arrangement (GA) drawings using Solid Works 2018
  , including Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
• Develop standardized structural products to improve production efficiency
• Produce detailed manufacturing drawings for fabrication and assembly
• Optimize designs for efficient structural steel usage and manufacturing practicality
• Design structures with optimal use of hand and power tools
• Design sheet metal cladding for E-House side walls
• Apply knowledge of sheet metal bending and punching processes
• Compile detailed re-assembly methodologies for on-site steel structure installation
• Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for procurement and costing
• Develop Original Equipment Manuals (OEMs) for:
  • E-Houses
  • Containerized substations
  • Electrical enclosures

• Grade 12 (Matric)
• N6 Mechanical Engineering qualification
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in structural design and detailing
• Proven drafting experience using design software (Solid Works preferred)
• Knowledge of AWS D1.1 welding standards
• Understanding of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) procedures
• Basic understanding of electrical enclosures
• Previous site experience within the mining or petrochemical industry
• Project management experience will be advantageous

• Experience with in the electrical switch gear industry
• Exposure to fabrication of MCCs (Motor Control Centres)
• Experience designing or working with:
  • Distribution boards
  • Electrical enclosures
  • Containerized electrical solutions

• Valid driver’s licence
• Proficient in English (read, write, speak, and understand)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
  , including formal reporting and presentations
• Ability to work independently and make sound decisions
• Strong sense of urgency with a customer-focused mindset
• Hard-working, resourceful, ambitious, and commercially aware

• Predominantly office-based
  , with occasional site visits
• May be required to work outside normal working hours
  , including evenings, weekends, and public holidays
• Participation in continuous professional development and training programs
