Senior Protection and Automation Technician

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance and calibration of protection devices, metering equipment, and switching devices (LV & MV).
• Conduct advanced troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis of protection faults.
• Carry out equipment repairs, replacements, and wiring for protection systems and switch gear.
• Lead installation and configuration of protection relays, control systems, and metering equipment using OEM software.
• Oversee FAT, SAT, and site commissioning of switch gear, protection, control, and metering systems, including relay testing, transformer tests, fault simulations, and communication checks.
• Support MV/HV switching operations and isolation procedures in line with site standards.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

• BTech or National Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
• Professional Registration with ECSA advantageous.
• ORHVS certification required.
• 5+ years’ experience in:
  • Testing & commissioning of protection systems and switch gear (380V – 33kV).
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting on electrical systems (380V – 33kV).
  • Repairs, replacements, and wiring of protection systems and switch gear.
  • Routine maintenance of protection, control, and metering systems.
  • Familiarity with test equipment (digital secondary injection sets, CB analysers, ductors, thermal imaging, etc.).
• Strong understanding of MV mining networks, protection principles, and communication protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, etc.).
