The Strategic Mine Closure Planner will lead the development and execution of comprehensive closure plans for BHP’s mining assets in South Africa. This includes coordinating with internal stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and local communities to design closure strategies that meet legal requirements, environmental standards, and social expectations. The role demands a blend of technical expertise, project management acumen, and strong communication skills to deliver closure solutions that protect ecosystems while unlocking post‑closure land use opportunities.

• Develop and maintain detailed mine closure plans aligned with South African mining legislation and BHP’s internal policies.
• Conduct environmental impact assessments, risk analyses, and cost‑benefit studies to inform closure decisions.
• Engage with local communities, NGOs, and government agencies to ensure transparent communication and collaborative planning.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams including engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, and legal advisors throughout the closure lifecycle.
• Monitor and report on closure progress, adjusting strategies as needed to meet timelines and budget constraints.
• Prepare and submit regulatory documentation, ensuring compliance with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) requirements.
• Identify post‑closure land use opportunities such as renewable energy projects, agriculture, or community facilities.

• Strong knowledge of mine closure regulations, reclamation techniques, and environmental management systems.
• Proficiency in project management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera).
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with a data‑driven decision‑making approach.
• Effective stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
• Ability to produce clear, concise technical reports and presentations for senior leadership.
• Familiarity with GIS, mine modelling, and environmental monitoring technologies.

A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced qualifications such as a Master’s degree or professional certifications in environmental management (e.g., NEBOSH, PMP) are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.

Candidates must possess 5‑8 years of hands‑on experience in mine closure planning, reclamation, or related environmental projects within the mining industry.
