Senior Specialist Geotechnical – Africa (Open Pit)

OBJECTIVE OFTHE ROLE
Provides specialist geotechnical engineering support and services for open pit operations and projects across the Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) African Business Unit. This role acts as a tactical advisor on rock/soil mechanics, hydrology, and hydrogeology, managing geotechnical risk and embedding within site teams through routine deployments to optimize local technical capability.
Role Accountabilities- Geotechnical Design & Systems:
Execute tactical open pit designs and reviews. Enforce Group data systems for collection, management (Geot Agg), and validation (Power Bi). - Operational Assurance:
Support technical compliance audits and reviews. Assist sites in creating actionable roadmaps to resolve data collection or structural model deviations. - Site Deployment & Secondment:
Act in seconded site roles for extended periods to directly drive workforce development, technical capability transfer, and operational compliance. - Risk & Business Planning:
Deliver functional data inputs to short- and medium-term plans to ensure ground control efficacy and regional asset optimization. - Training &
Coaching:
Provide functional training to site personnel on data management systems, GMRi, and GRiP implementation.
- Bachelor’s degree Geology, Mining, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline (post-graduate qualification is highly desirable).
- Greater than 8 years onsite operational experience in open pit mining in both deep saprolite and hard rock slopes (QAQC, risk management and data collection)
- Has written/ developed Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP) and Trigger Action Response Procedures (TARP)
- Involved with optimising drilling and blasting to minimise wall damage
- Extensive experience with managing instabilities through the use of slope monitoring systems eg slope stability radars, prisms, InSAR)
- Has coached / developed junior engineers
- Willingness to travel extensively
