Substation Design Engineer (Primary Plant)

WSP in Africa is growing its Power & Energy team and is looking for Substation Primary Plant Design Engineers and Technologists at Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Levels.
You will contribute to transmission, distribution and renewable-energy grid connection projects across Africa and international markets, working on LV, MV, HV and EHV systems up to 765 kV.
What You'll Do
Develop substation layouts, single-line diagrams, sections, equipment arrangements, earthing, lighting and lightning protection designs.
Complete design calculations and studies covering clearances, busbars, equipment ratings, insulation coordination and earthing.
Prepare specifications, reports, schedules, bills of quantities and tender documentation.
Review supplier and contractor designs and support construction, testing and commissioning.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary and global teams on utility, IPP, Solar PV, Wind and BESS projects.
What You'll Bring
BSc, BEng or BTech in Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
Relevant substation primary plant design experience
ECSA Professional or Candidate registration, as appropriate to your career level.
Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, SANS, NRS, Eskom or comparable utility standards.
Experience in transmission, distribution, grid connection or utility-scale renewable-energy projects.

WSP South Africa is looking for candidates holding BSc or BEng in Electrical Engineering or similar. Primarily functioning as a substation secondary plant design engineer for transmission and distribution projects. The candidate should have experience with leading teams of engineers involved in the preliminary, conceptual, detailed design and construction support of substations with PTMC systems and design, voltages ranging from 400 V LV (AC/DC) to 500kV AC.

Experience with 765 kV AC or DC would be beneficial. The role will involve technical delivery and project management within a team but also working individually on various projects.

• Depending on the project brief, the candidate shall be able to prepare or review conceptual or functional designs, specifications, bills of quantity and tender documents for substation projects (11kV to 500kV) to internationally accepted standards for clients in Southern Africa and internationally.

• Preparation of detailed protection and communication design packages for any configuration of substation and power network.

• Prepare protection schemes, relay setting philosophy, communication architecture which shall include schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, protection and control drawings, interface diagrams, etc.
