Core purpose of the role
The Network Engineer Level 2 configures, manages, and troubleshoots enterprise network devices and services independently. Provides second-line engineering support, ensures high availability, and contributes to enhancements and upgrades in network performance and security.
The intermediate role provides a mix of RUN (incident resolution, day-to-day operations) and GROW (enhancements, projects, optimisations).
Key deliverables and outputs Network Configuration and Support- Independently configure routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and wireless controllers
- Implement VLANs, VPNs, and routing protocols
- Ensure changes comply with standards and policies.
- Resolve escalated incidents from Level 1 Engineers/Technicians
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes
- Maintain detailed configuration and change records
- Participate in CAB reviews for network-related changes.
- Use monitoring tools to proactively detect performance issues
- Optimise bandwidth and performance across sites
- Identify and recommend improvements.
- Implement and maintain firewall rules, access controls, and patching
- Support Cybersecurity in vulnerability remediation
- Ensure compliance with POPIA, GDPR, and ISO requirements.
- Participate in GROW projects (SD-WAN, Wi-Fi rollouts, migrations)
- Support new rollouts, upgrades, and small transformation initiatives
- Provide technical input into project design and implementation
- Test and document new solutions.
- Mentor and coach Engineers (L1)
- Produce technical documentation, playbooks, and best practice guides
- Participate in training programmes, mentorships, and peer learning activities.
The role requires close engagement and collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders.
Internal StakeholdersInfrastructure, Cybersecurity, Cloud, Service Management, Service Desk.
External StakeholdersNetwork vendors Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Managed service partners.
Academic QualificationsEssential:
- NQF Level 7 Qualification in Information Technology, Computer Science, or Network Engineering
- Cisco CCNA (mandatory)
- Valid Driver’s License.
Advantageous:
- Cisco CCNP
- Juniper JNCIS
- ITIL Foundation.
Note: Requires after-hours and weekend availability for critical changes. Must hold or maintain expert-level certifications. May involve travel to data centres or partner sites.
Work ExperienceEssential:
- 3–5 Years’ 3–5 years in enterprise networking roles
- Proven track record in WAN, LAN, WLAN, VPN, and firewall implementations
- Experience integrating networks with cloud and hybrid environments
- Proven track record in designing and delivering enterprise-scale network solutions
- Experience with WAN, LAN, WLAN, VPN, and hybrid cloud networking at scale.
Advantageous:
- 2-3 Years’ Prior experience within the automotive or leasing industry
- Hands-on involvement in projects (SD-WAN, network upgrades, firewall implementations, major refreshes, etc.)
- Involvement in automation of networking tasks and adoption of Software Defined Networking (SDN)
