Role Purpose To be responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining and monitoring an environment consisting of Windows and Linux servers, connected to a SAN environment;
This environment will consist of both physical and virtual servers on both platforms
- Drive business profitability through effective cost management enabled by Information Technology solutions.
- Increase operational efficiency by identifying and recommending solutions that enhance cost‑effectiveness.
- Ensure effective Hardware and Software Asset Management across deployed environments to maximise return on technology investments.
- Deliver exceptional service that exceeds customer expectations by providing proactive, innovative and appropriate solutions, ensuring fast and effective query resolution.
- Cultivate and manage productive working relationships with various stakeholders — including end‑users, SMEs, project managers and senior staff — by providing valuable input into business requirements.
- Install, configure, maintain and monitor environments consisting of Windows and Linux servers connected to a SAN, ensuring both physical and virtual servers are properly controlled, and managing server OS, application software and hardware upgrades.
- Comply with, understand and implement all IT development processes, meeting governance, legislative and audit requirements by applying and maintaining security policies aligned to FRB Audit standards.
- Perform UAT setup, testing, technical tasks and maintenance activities, ensuring all system alerts are addressed and escalated appropriately, and provide technical support for business servers and applications.
- Manage and maintain customer Service Level Agreements (SLAs) related to server installation, maintenance and support, ensuring adherence to architectural standards and compliance with change‑management procedures and policies.
- Provide efficient administrative services through careful, timely planning, reporting and updating of all relevant information.
- Manage own development to continuously grow competencies.
- Ensure continuous availability of all Disaster Recovery (DR), Training, Production, UAT and Development environments.
- Qualification:
Post matric qualification in Bachelor of Technology NQF Level 7 or related qualification - Experience:
4 to 5 years’ experience in System Design and Administration with Databases.
Skills Required:
- Knowledge and experience working on any of the following Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, MySQL / Maria
DB, Postgre
SQL, IBM Db2 Databases. - Installing database engines and instances
- Applying patches, service packs, and version upgrades
- Configuring storage, memory, and instance parameters
- Design backup strategies (full, differential, incremental, log backups)
- Perform point‑in‑time recovery
- Test/validate restores
- Use built‑in tools like SQL Server Backup, RMAN (Oracle), , etc.
- Role‑based access (RBAC)
- Users, logins, permissions, and groups
- Implementing least‑privilege access
- Encryption at rest & in transit
- TLS/SSL configuration
- Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)
- Understanding execution plans
- Index tuning (clustered, non‑clustered, column store, b‑tree, etc.)
- Reducing I/O, CPU & memory consumption
- Using monitoring tools (SQL Profiler, Performance Monitor, Oracle AWR, )
- Identifying bottlenecks: slow queries, locking, blocking, deadlocks
- Understanding execution plans
- Index tuning (clustered, non‑clustered, column store, b‑tree, etc.)
- Reducing I/O, CPU & memory consumption
- Scheduling jobs (SQL Agent, cron)
- API usage for cloud DB admin
- Infrastructure as code basics (Terraform, ARM templates—optional but valuable)
